The Kite Runner by Khaled Housseini

Crazy popular when it came out, Housseini’s debut novel was topping the bestseller charts because it is raw with emotion and brutal honesty. I would say this book is a definite must-read, especially in light of modern-day events in the Middle East.

I especially appreciate the unique perspective Housseini reveals in his storytelling. It’s easy to categorize everybody in the Middle East as crazy conservative Muslims bent on destroying the U.S. but that’s not true. The locals living there are terrified of the radical Islamic groups as well, and we see that firsthand through the eyes of our protagonist, Amir. We see how his beautiful homeland full of lazy kite-flying days during childhood gets torn apart by war.

Amazing book on friendship, betrayal, and forgiveness!
