Our Visit to the Nobel Peace Prize Youth Festival!

On Friday March 7th, the Nobel Peace Prize Forum Youth Festival took place at Augsburg College.  On that day there were several hundred students were inspired by dynamic Nobel LaureateLeymah Gbowee (Liberia, 2011 Nobel Peace Prize) and Dr. Deane Marchbein, American President of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders, Nobel Peace Prize 1999). Ms Gbowee was a keynote speaker on Sunday afternoon; Dr. Marchbein was a keynote speaker on Saturday morning. The first half of the day was dedicated to Leymah Gbowee, who talked about what difference we could make if we kept trying to succeed at our goals.
At one point she asked if most of the people in the room had cell phones/ipod etc. and she asked the staff to turn the lights off and for us to turn on the flashlights or screens of our devices and she talked about how in a dark world we are the light she also said, “you, the young people, are the light of the world”; a simple, powerful encouragement to everyone that they, individually, make all the difference. She was also very funny but serious at the same time.  She had a very friendly feeling when you met her.  At the forum there were small tables and each had a group.  She seemed to have spent a few more minutes at the Lamton table than at the other tables.
If I had the chance to go there again, I would because this isn’t something that happens everyday.  It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.
